Sunday is not the Christian Sabbath. We do not have any Bible reference to support this claim. The Sabbath never changed. It is still on the seventh day, Saturday as it always was.
We find Jesus honouring the Sabbath while on Earth. (Luke 4:16)
He also warns the apostles to pray not to have to flee on the Sabbath day when the Romans were coming to destroy Jerusalem. (Matthew 24:20)
The apostles also were honouring the Sabbath on the seventh day, and not on the first day of the week. (Acts 13:42,44, 16:13, 17:2, 18:4)
If the Bible is clear about the Sabbath still being on Saturday, why then do the majority of Christian churches worship on Sunday?
Let’s explore together the reasons why many sincere Christians are being misled to worship on the wrong day.
Does the Bible say that Sunday is the Sabbath?
The Bible does not say that Sunday is the Sabbath. You can read it from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find any verse supporting this claim.
Jesus kept the Sabbath while He was on Earth as we are shown in Luke 4:16.
He also declares that He came not to change the Law, but to fulfil it. (Matthew 5:17-18)
There is a wrong interpretation of Acts 20:7 as being “the proof” that the Sabbath was changed to the first day of the week.
And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
Acts 20:7
Let’s break this verse down.
The disciples were breaking bread every day. (Acts 2:46)
And here is talking about what we call today Saturday evening. In those times the day was counted from sunset to sunset. (Leviticus 23:32)
It was not a worship service. Paul was getting ready to travel the next day, an act which was not to be made on the Sabbath.
Here is simply a misunderstanding, and not a proof for the Sabbath to be changed to Sunday.
Is Sunday a holy day in Christianity?
Unfortunately, Sunday is considered to be a holy day in Christianity. But it has no support in the Bible.
God never authorized nor changed His holy day of rest which He blessed, sanctified, and written in stone. (Genesis 2:2-3, Exodus 31:18)
There are many sincere, God-loving Christians today who worship on Sunday. They love the Lord, and they worship according to the light they have.
But we must not rely on priests, and pastors for our spiritual life. Yes, they do have their role in helping us, but ultimately we will all be judged by the Word of God.
That’s why it is important to study the Bible for ourselves.
People are finding many stories and reasons for honouring Sunday as a holy day. But as Christians, we must follow the Bible, because it is the utmost authority. (John 17:17)
They may be sincere in wanting to honour the resurrection day when Jesus rose from the dead. But we do not find this commandment in the Bible.
We cannot make our own rules and laws. We either follow God and His Word, or man and his tradition.
When did Christians start worshipping on Sunday?
The change did not come at once but gradually. The Jewish people were persecuted by the Romans, and Christians started to slowly make compromises to detach themselves from the Jewish people.
Wanting not to be associated with the Jews for fear of persecution, they changed their worship from biblical Sabbath – Saturday to SUNday worship, which is a pagan day.
They kept both the Sabbath and Sunday, until they remained with Sunday only.
SUNday was and is the day of the Sun when pagans celebrated it in honour of the Sun.
Emperor Constantine of Rome in 321 AD gave a law in honour of Sunday.
“Like the majority, both of his contemporaries and also more particularly of his predecessors on the imperial throne, Constantine was warmly disposed towards Sun-worship.”
Will Rodorf, Sunday, pg 163-164
“On the venerable day of the Sun, let the magistrates and people residing in the cities rest, and let all workshops be closed! In the country, however, persons engaged in agriculture may freely and lawfully continue their pursuits!”
History of the Christian Church, 1902 ed., vol. 3, p. 380
That’s how the shift from Sabbath to Sunday started! It was a gradual change!
Later in the Council of Laodicea, the Papal power also declared Sunday holy, but with no Scriptural authority, but by their power.
A dangerous thing to attempt on the holy Law of God!
“Christians shall not Judaize [keep Sabbath] and be idle on Saturday…but shall work that day; but the Lord’s day shall they, especially honor, and, as being Christians, shall if possible, do no work on that day.”
A History of the Councils of the Church, vol. 2, p. 252
Did God change the Sabbath to Sunday?
God never changed the Sabbath to Sunday. It is not in the Bible. This change came from men and their councils.
God is not like us to change. (Malachi 3:6)
He gave Moses the Ten Commandments written in stone to show they are unchangeable. (Exodus 31:18)
Jesus also declares about His Holy Law:
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:17-19 KJV
Is Sunday Worship biblical?
Sunday worship has no biblical support. Nowhere in the Bible do we find a commandment for the Sabbath to be changed.
Many think that because Jesus rose on that day, it is now holy or changed as the new Sabbath.
Fine, but show us from the Word of God, where does it say that?
The fact that someone interprets that event as they see fit, does not make it truth.
And it is something dangerous to play with the Law of God.
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Revelation 22:18-19 KJV
Wrapping Up
In conclusion, we have discovered together that Sunday is not the new Sabbath. God never changed it.
He blessed and sanctified the seventh day of the week, Saturday.
Even if millions of Christians are worshipping today on Sunday, it still does not make it the true Sabbath.
God wants us to obey Him and His commandments, and not man’s. (John 14:15)
Every one of us must make a decision. A day will come in the near future when people will be forced to embrace false worship. (Revelation 13)
There will be consequences of not being able to buy or sell and a death decree.
We must learn today the Holy Bible, believe in it and study it.
Otherwise what we are going to do when Satan and his fallen angels unleash their miracle-deceptive powers on humanity? (Revelation 13:13-17)
Are we going to be deceived by the miracles or standing firm on the Word of God? (Isaiah 8:20)
