When did the Catholic Church change the Sabbath day from Saturday to Sunday?
According to historical records, around the year 363 A.D., in the Council of Laodicea, the Catholic Church decided on its own that the Sabbath is to be changed from Saturday to Sunday, the first day of the week!
“Christians shall not Judaize and be idle on Saturday but shall work on that day; but the Lord’s day they shall especially honour, and, as being Christians, shall, if possible, do no work on that day. If, however, they are found Judaizing, they shall be shut out from Christ”
(Strand, op. cit., citing Charles J. Hefele, A History of the Councils of the Church, 2 [Edinburgh, 1876] 316).
They call Sunday the Lord’s Day! But this is incorrect because the Bible tells us that the Sabbath is the Lord’s day!
Matthew 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
Isaiah 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day;…
Catholic Church Admits They Changed the Sabbath
“Is Saturday the seventh day according to the Bible and the Ten Commandments? I answer yes. Is Sunday the first day of the week and did the Church change the seventh day -Saturday – for Sunday, the first day? I answer yes . Did Christ change the day’? I answer no!
“Faithfully yours, J. Card. Gibbons”
James Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore (1877-1921), in a signed letter.
“For example, nowhere in the Bible do we find that Christ or the Apostles ordered that the Sabbath be changed from Saturday to Sunday. We have the commandment of God given to Moses to keep holy the Sabbath day, that is the 7th day of the week, Saturday. Today most Christians keep Sunday because it has been revealed to us by the[Roman Catholic] church outside the Bible.”
Catholic Virginian Oct. 3, 1947, p. 9, art. “To Tell You the Truth.”
“Question: Which is the Sabbath day?
“Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day.
“Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
“Answer. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.”
Peter Geiermann, C.S.S.R., The Converts Catechism of Catholic Doctrine (1957), p. 50.
“Nowhere in the Bible is it stated that worship should be changed from Saturday to Sunday …. Now the Church … instituted, by God’s authority, Sunday as the day of worship. This same Church, by the same divine authority, taught the doctrine of Purgatory long before the Bible was made. We have, therefore, the same authority for Purgatory as we have for Sunday.”
Martin J. Scott, Things Catholics Are Asked About (1927),p. 136
Catholic Record, September 1893 & More Quotes
“The Catholic Church for more than one thousand years before the existence of a Protestant, by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday.” –The Catholic Mirror, September 1893
“Perhaps the boldest thing, the most revolutionary change the Church ever did, happened in the first century. The holy day, the Sabbath, was changed from Saturday to Sunday… was chosen, not from any directions noted in the Scriptures, but from the Church’s sense of its own power…” – Saint Catherine Catholic Church Sentinel, May 21, 1995
“It is well to remind the Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, and all other Christians, that the Bible does not support them anywhere in their observance of Sunday. Sunday is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church, and those who observe the day observe a commandment of the Catholic Church.” – Priest Brady, The Elizabeth, NJ ‘News’ March 18, 1903
Did the Catholic Church change the Sabbath day to Sunday?
The prophecy from the book of Daniel in chapter 7 verse 25 told us that this change will happen! God knew all along about this change of His holy Law!
This persecuting power, that made war with the saints of God, also changed His holy Law!
And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
Daniel 7:25 KJV
Matthew 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Catholic Church changed the Sabbath day to Sunday, because they claim that the first day of the week is the new Sabbath because of Christ’s resurrection!
However, there are no Bible verses to support this change, and it’s simply the invention and tradition of the Church of Rome!
They also claim that the Church is above the Bible (Catholic Record of London, Ontario Sept 1, 1923), but can a mortal man be above God and His laws?
The world is drunken with the wine of Babylon – false doctrines and teachings! God is calling you out (Revelation 18:4). Will you listen to His voice to be saved?
What will your choice be? Will you obey God’s or man’s teachings?
It’s your decision! May God help you in making the right choice!
