When Was the Sabbath Established in the Bible?

The Sabbath is one of the most significant and enduring commandments in the Bible.

It serves not just as a day of physical rest, but also as a spiritual sign, marking the relationship between God, His creation, and His people. (Ezekiel 20:20)

Understanding when the Sabbath was established is crucial for interpreting its meaning and importance throughout the Bible.

Contrary to the belief that Sabbath observance began with Moses at Mount Sinai, the Bible traces its origins all the way back to Genesis—at the very beginning of creation.

The Genesis Foundation: Sabbath at Creation

The clearest answer to when the Sabbath was established in the Bible comes from the first chapters of Genesis.

After creating the world in six days, God sets aside the seventh day as unique.

Genesis 2:2-3  And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

The language here is crucial:

  • God “rested”: Not out of need, but as a model for humanity.
  • God “blessed” and “sanctified” the day: This sets the seventh day apart from all others.
  • Done at Creation: This blessing and sanctification took place before there were any nations, laws, or even sin on earth.

Emphasizing the Genesis Origin: The Sabbath did not originate with Moses, the Israelites, or the giving of the Ten Commandments.

Instead, its roots are found at the very foundation of the world.

By blessing and sanctifying the seventh day, God embedded Sabbath observance into the structure of creation itself.

The Sabbath before Sinai

It’s important to notice that the Sabbath appears in Scripture before the formal giving of the Ten Commandments at Sinai.

For example, when God provided manna from heaven for the Israelites in the wilderness (Exodus 16), He instructed them to gather double on the sixth day so that they would not need to work on the seventh.

This happened before the law was given at Sinai.

Exodus 16:23  And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

This reference shows that the knowledge of the Sabbath existed before God etched the commandments in stone.

The Israelites understood that Sabbath keeping was expected of them, even without Mount Sinai’s formal declaration.

The Sabbath in the Ten Commandments

Exodus 20 presents the Ten Commandments, and the Sabbath commandment stands among them—not as a new decree, but as a remembrance.

Exodus 20:8-11  Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Key Insights:

  • The command is to “remember” (not “create”) the Sabbath, implying its existence prior to Sinai.
  • The basis of Sabbath observance is explicitly rooted in creation—echoing Genesis 2:1-3.

The Sabbath is for everyone

Some commands were designed specifically for Israel (dietary laws, festivals, etc.), while others are universal (not stealing, not killing).

By placing the Sabbath’s establishment in Genesis, the Bible presents it as a law intended for all people, everywhere.

The Sabbath, being rooted in the rhythm of creation, is intended as a blessing for all humankind, not just one nation or people.

The Sabbath in the Life of Jesus

Jesus affirmed the creation origins of the Sabbath by reminding His listeners:

Mark 2:27 (KJV): And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: ”

  • “Made for man” (Greek: ἄνθρωπος, anthropos, meaning humankind) signals that the Sabbath was designed as a gift for all people, not just Israelites.
  • Christ’s words point back to creation’s purpose, affirming that the Sabbath was part of God’s plan from the start.

Sabbath as a Perpetual Sign

The Sabbath later becomes a sign of the covenant between God and His people, but this sign is rooted in creation’s example.

Ezekiel 20:12 (KJV): Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.

This holy day’s original establishment at Creation underlies every mention and commandment about the Sabbath in later Scripture.

Addressing Common Objections

Was the Sabbath only for Israel? As shown, the Sabbath was sanctified at creation, long before there was a nation of Israel.

Did the Sabbath begin at Sinai? The Bible records Sabbath observance and expectation before the law at Sinai (as with manna in Exodus 16), and the rationale for Sabbath-keeping is always linked to creation, not Sinai.

Conclusion: The Sabbath—A Gift from the Dawn of Creation

The biblical record is clear: The Sabbath was established at the very beginning, in the book of Genesis, blessed and set apart by God Himself after the six days of Creation.

It was not invented for a single nation, nor was it instituted for a brief period in history.

Instead, the Sabbath is a perpetual, weekly reminder of our relationship to the Creator, enshrined in the cycle of time from the very dawn of human existence.

As a day blessed and sanctified by God, the Sabbath stands as both a gift and a calling for all people to rest, remember, and rejoice in the goodness of the Creator.

From Genesis to Revelation, its significance echoes as a sign of God’s enduring love and a rhythm of rest built into the very fabric of existence itself.
