Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.
Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
Deuteronomy 5:12-15 KJV
What is the meaning of Deuteronomy 5:12-15?
The meaning of Deuteronomy 5:12-15 is the same as in the fourth commandment in Exodus 20.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Exodus 20:8-11 KJV
Important to know is the fact that the Sabbath was established after the six literal creation days.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Genesis 2:2-3 KJV
The people of God already knew about the Sabbath commandment. Long before God gave Moses the Ten Commandments written in stone, we find the mention of the Sabbath in Exodus 16.
This event was before they reached Mount Sinai where the Commandments were given in written form in stone to Moses. (Exodus 31:18)
Thus, in Deuteronomy 5:12-15, Moses is reminding again to the people of Israel of the importance of the Sabbath Day.
Today, we are also to keep the Sabbath day holy, by not doing any work or our own pleasures.
Not only that, but we are also to let everyone who is living with us, family, and strangers rest and not do any work on this holy day.
The same as Moses reminded the people of Israel of the importance of keeping God’s commandments, including the Sabbath, we are also to remind ourselves how important are His Laws, and to obey Him!
What is the Sabbath day in Deuteronomy 5?
The Sabbath day in Deuteronomy 5 is the fourth commandment, the same as in Exodus 20:8-11.
It refers to rest and ceasing of any works and own pleasure, and instead to honor God in this holy day.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Deuteronomy 5:12-15 serves as a reminder and a lesson to us all. It reminds us of the importance of keeping the Sabbath day holy and free from work, as God commanded.
It also serves as a lesson, to remind us of the fact that as God delivered the Israelites from slavery from Egypt, He also delivered us from the slavery of sin.
To God be the glory for sending His only Son to die on the cross for us so that we may be free from the power of sin!
